A collection of the various pixel art styles I learned from
I started by editing pre-existing sprites to match the characters I wanted to portray. I recolored, redrew, and spliced sprites together until I got a feel for the art style, and then I decided to make a few completely handmade sprites that weren’t just recolors of pre-existing sprites using my newfound feel for the Pokémon pixel art style. Doing this allowed me to add pixel art to the list of art styles I can draw in, and it taught me how to make some good designs using limited resources (in this case, limited pixels).
After finalizing that project, I decided to continue it with the art styles of other games that utilize pixel art. Using what I had learned from mimicking the Pokémon art style, I applied my newfound pixel art skills towards recreating and learning from the art styles of other games, and eventually I decided to take what I had learned from each one and develop my own pixel art style off of it.
